Access to St. George BLOCKED by FIRE in Bennett Road - EBLN
The EBLN in St. George is a DISASTER
A fire broke out this morning, 7th Feb 2026, at approximately 9:30am in the St. George area of the disastrous EBLN. Thankfully, the 2 residents were OK according to members of the public in the street at the time:
The REAL Issue
Beaconsfield Road is now the ONLY way into St George thanks to the EBLN’s road blocks.
Once emergency vehicles are committed inside, NOBODY else can get through - residents, ambulances, police, or even more fire support if things escalate.
This is exactly what opponents warned about: poorly planned “liveable” schemes turning neighbourhoods into trap zones during real emergencies. We’ve seen repeated reports of fire crew delays across the EBLN area (Barton Hill, Redfield, St George). This blaze is another stark example of why these barriers put lives at risk.

Watch and understand yourself why the EBLN in St. George is a complete and utter DISASTER.
The EBLN traps residents like prisoners, with only one way in, and one-way out in today’s case.

So, the cynic in me (i do try to tame her but it's hard!) says well, just ban car parking on the street so that there is always room for emergency vehicles, and install cameras to make absolutely sure no-one drives down it anymore. Probably including residents themselves. They can shop or get deliveries by bike. Maybe soon even by drone.
Do you see where I'm going with this? Emergency vehicle access is only going to be used as a lever to bring in more restrictions plus surveillance.
Honestly, I knew this was going to happen, we have all been warning car haters BCC that if someone dies because emergency vehicles couldn't get to them in time, that that death would be entirely on BCC, shame on BCC for refusing to listen the strong opposition local and business and other drivers' voices for a whole year that this anti-motorist EBLN was a disaster from the outset. Thankfully, the no one has died in this fire incident, but we cannot wait for a death to happen before BCC will see sense and END this EBLN immediately and re-open all the blocked streets and roads in EB.
